Last week I've been looking back at the BOS tools. Monkube is working to reach the deadlines of other projects atm. 4 In a blow bug playtesting is done and all bugs are noted. I could try to balance the game a bit more, but I have had enough of all the balancing at the moment. Looking at the methodology is a refreshing break for a change. |

The first thing I notice is that not many people talk about BOS in the video game industry. If you google BOS and video games you mostly get the example of nintendo's Wii. But that's it.
In my blogpost Blue ocean and game design I talked about this research paper.
Feel free to read that post again but I want to find new stuff in hope of finding more people that are willing to learn more about BOS and game design.

How machine zone avoided an embattled ocean with a Game of War.
I never played the game. Michael Olenick has a point that Game of War diverges itself from other games.
My biggest question remains: How and why did he pick the features for his strategy canvas? - recode.net
Tim Merel is talking about Nintendo's view on Ar and VR. - gamasutra.com
Brjann Sigurgeirsson is pointing to the 3DS as an alternative for premium mobile games. This might work for some games but not for all. Certainly not for casual games.
"Casual gamers" only play games on the most obvious hardware like smartphones or tablets. - adweek.com
The red ocean of social games. Tadhg Kelly discusses how the social gaming industry fits into the “red ocean/blue ocean” business framework — basically, why social games are so often copies of each other and what developers can do differently in order to succeed. - socialmediation.com
The admin of the site talks about his idea for a bingo and how he thinks it fits into BOS. Not worth reading in my opinion but at least he is talking about BOS. - gdcvault.com
A nice video about how developers try to find blue ocean.
continuing the research
Although that my game 4 in a blow feels and looks very different then any other connect 4 games, I always doubted that I used the BOS tools correctly.
My quest for assistance has not yielded very much. Not many people know BOS. And even if they know it, they don't have the time to anser my questions.
So my 2 problems with the BOS tools remain:
Help could still come from howest, a university in Belgium, Kortrijk. I've sended a mail. I wonder when I will get an anser.
Meanwhile, I continue my research on my own.

- making the right survey to find the commonalities of the customers and non customers
- putting the right features and the right games into the strategy canvas

More BOS and research things
I must not forget that marketing will still count for 33% of my games succes.
I have no idea how to apply BOS to a marketing plan. And I'm also wondering how monetization fits this all.
Work and research enough to be done.
